MICR fonts are needed for check readability
Like MICR toner or ink, MICR fonts streamline the processing and clearance of checks and other documents and are a banking requirement. The account and routing numbers at the bottom of a check are known as the MICR line, and must be printed in either E-13B or CMC-7 MICR fonts in order to be accepted by the bank.
-
- E-13B: Used in the US, Canada, UK, and other countries.
- CMC-7: Used in Europe and South America.

How MICR Works
MICR characters are printed using magnetic ink or toner containing iron oxide. When a check with MICR is scanned, the MICR reader magnetizes the ink and then detects the characters based on their magnetic properties. This allows for fast and accurate processing of checks.
MICR printing must meet specific standards set by organizations such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Bankers Association (ABA). These standards cover aspects like toner signal strength, and the placement of MICR lines on documents.
