MICR, or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition allows checks to be machine-readable, so banks can process them without the need for data entry and the errors that come with it. MICR is a requirement by the American Banking Association, so any printed check must contain the presence of MICR toner in the MICR line that appears at the bottom section of the check, containing the accounting and routing numbers.  

TROY’s MICR Toner Secure: The World’s Most Fraud-Resistant Toner 

While MICR toner is a banking requirement, it does not protect a check from fraud attempts like check washing. Check washing is a popular fraud technique where criminals will use chemicals to alter and change the account information, payee name, or amount on a check. Much to a fraudster’s dismay, TROY is the proud creator of MICR Toner Secure, our patented MICR toner that releases a tamper-evident red dye whenever any chemical alteration is attempted. When the red dye is released, the check is ruined, and the banks are immediately alerted of the fraud attempt.  

TROY’s 30-year OEM Partnership with HP 

TROY’s 30-year OEM partnership with HP allows us to enhance HP products such as toner cartridges and standard HP printers with security features designed for check printing. To this day, TROY is the only OEM partner of HP authorized to enhance HP products with security features. HP toner cartridges are enhanced with MICR Toner Secure, and standard HP printers are enhanced with security features like exact positioning technology for printing of MICR lines, toner sensing, paper tray locks, and much more. These security solutions are an end-to-end solution for businesses of all sizes and have positioned TROY as a leading provider of financial and document security.   

Beyond Printing: Innovating Software for the Future
